Fire-Safe Landscaping in Utah

Create defensible space around your home without giving up a beautiful yard.

Many Utah neighborhoods sit right where homes meet foothills and wildland. Fire-safe landscaping reduces the fuel around your home and helps slow a fire’s approach, while still looking great. We design and build landscapes with wildfire in mind.

What's Included

The Three Zones

Defensible space is usually planned in three zones. 0 to 5 feet from the house: non-flammable materials only, like rock and pavers, with no bark mulch. 5 to 30 feet: well-spaced, low-growing, irrigated plants, with tree limbs trimmed up off the ground. 30 to 100 feet: brush thinned and fuels kept low. Your city or fire district may have its own requirements in wildland areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are any plants fireproof?

No plant is fireproof, but many are fire-resistant: they hold more moisture, have less oil or resin, and don’t build up dry debris. We’ll choose fire-resistant species that also suit your soil and water.

Is bark mulch okay?

Keep bark mulch out of the first 5 feet around your home and away from decks. Use rock or gravel there instead.
