Lawn Dethatching in Utah

Clear out the dead layer that's choking your lawn.

Thatch is the layer of dead stems and roots between the grass blades and the soil. A thin layer is normal. Once it’s more than about half an inch thick, it blocks water and fertilizer, harbors disease and makes the lawn feel spongy. Dethatching removes it so your lawn can breathe again.

What's Included

Timing Matters

Dethatching is hard on grass, so it should happen while the lawn is growing strongly and can recover. In northern Utah, that means early fall or spring for cool-season lawns. In St. George, warm-season lawns are best dethatched in late spring or early summer. Pairing dethatching with aeration gives the biggest benefit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my lawn needs dethatching?

Cut out a small wedge of lawn and look at the brown layer between the grass and the soil. If it’s thicker than half an inch, or the lawn feels spongy and water runs off, it’s time.

Dethatching or aeration?

Aeration relieves compacted soil and slowly breaks down thatch over time. Dethatching physically removes a thick layer. Many lawns need aeration every year but dethatching only now and then.
